Description
Cambodia’s Mini-Angkor on a Hilltop
High above the Battambang countryside, Phnom Banan stands like a sentinel of the past — an 11th-century temple perched atop a hill, surrounded by thick forest and farmlands. Often called the "Little Angkor Wat" of the region, it rewards every visitor who climbs its 358 stone steps with silence, sweeping views, and a soulful encounter with ancient Khmer craftsmanship.
🕰️ A Temple with Ancient Roots Built during the reign of King Udayadityavarman II in the 11th century, Phnom Banan’s temple complex mirrors the architectural style of Angkor’s Baphuon period. The five towers — now weathered but still majestic — were constructed from laterite and sandstone, standing in a quincunx (four corners and one in the center), a sacred layout in Khmer cosmology. Worn carvings, broken lintels, and moss-covered stones whisper of the temple's once-grand spiritual role. It was a place of worship, reflection, and alignment with the gods, still echoing with those ancient intentions today.
🧗♂️ The Climb and the View The path to Phnom Banan begins with a shaded staircase, flanked by dragon-like naga balustrades and mischievous monkeys. It’s a good climb — and a great leg workout — but each step builds anticipation. Once at the summit, you’re greeted not just by temple ruins, but 360-degree views of Battambang’s lush plains, rice paddies, and the snaking Sangkae River below. You’ll want to sit for a while. Maybe longer. The breeze is generous up there.
