Orussey Market, also known as Phsar Orussey, is the largest market in Phnom Penh.

Unlike Phnom Pehn’s Central Market and Russian Market, the traders in Orussey Market have very interesting in selling anything to tourists. Nearly 100% of the shoppers who come to Orussey Market are locals doing household shopping or market traders and shop owners coming to buy stock. This is the place to visit if you want to see how Cambodian people really live. Little English is spoken at the market, and its hot, busy and many foreign visitors will find being in the market oppressive and claustrophobic. However, a visit to Orussey Market is definitely an experience that you won’t forget, possibly for the the wrong reasons.

About Orussey Market

Orussey Market is located inside a three storey concrete building situated on one of the most busy roads in Phnom Penh. The market stalls on the ground floor are the busiest and they sell everyday household goods and products required to operate small businesses.

Kitchen utensils, appliances and gadgets of every kind are sold in Orussey Market. A lot of what is sold is intended for use in commercial kitchens and food stalls. For this reason the ground floor gets very busy from 05:00 to 07:00 when restaurateurs and stallholders come to buy the things they need for a day’s trading

There is a ‘wet market’ on the ground floor which sells meat fish and vegetables. Dried, preserved and canned foodstuffs are also sold.

The market also has plenty of cheap food stalls. The food sold here is not all Cambodians food either, a lot of Vietnamese and Chinese style is also sold at the market to cater for an international clientele, with traders coming from neighbouring countries to hunt down wholesale bargains in Orussey Market.

Orussey Market is famous for being the one place in Phnom Penh where you can buy pretty much anything you could possibly need. There are lots of children’s toys on sale on the ground floor of the market.

Because of the size of the market and the volume of customers who pass through, Orussey Market can support some very specialist outlet. As you will see in the picture above, we found a stall which sells only wheels for trolleys and wheelbarrows, of every shape and size by the looks of it.

The second and third are accessible by stairways from the inside of the ground floor. Although when you visit you will see that the accessibility of the upper floors is somewhat limited on account of the vendors setting up shop on the stairs. Not much thought is given to ‘fire safety’ in Orussey Market.

After the chaos of the ground floor, the first and second floors will be a welcome relief. People come here to buy clothes and accessories. Most of the shoppers are younger people looking for the latest fashions at low prices and market traders buying in bulk to sell on stalls in the provinces.

The clothes on sale are an odd mix of Khmer fashions, local brands and reproductions of well known Western brands. As a foreign visitor you may have difficulties finding anything that will fit you if you weigh more than 60 kg and you are taller than 5 ft 5 inches.
