Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and built during the Khmer Empire, the Preah Vihear Temple sits spectacularly atop Poy Tadi, a 525-metre (1720 ft) cliff in the Dangrek Mountains of Preah Vihear Province. With its prime location, it enjoys the best setting of any other Angkorian temple with views extending many miles in all directions. As a key center of religious life in Cambodia and considered an outstanding masterpiece of Khmer architecture, the temple was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
